Making a Plan – the best place to start

Hiiiii little tomato seedlings! Looking good! I am going to wait a couple more weeks before I thin the herd and if possible make some of them transplants for others to plant and enjoy. This is the plan, but seldom does making a plan actually go exactly as planned.

If you are just joining The Next 15 Levels, part of my journey is self-sufficiency. My 2023 goal for self-sufficiency is to grow something edible. Not that edible, haha! This means from planting seeds to actually harvesting food. I do have ADHD so sticking with this long process and not getting bored is going to be a hurdle.

I got a late start this season and have learned that I should have started the seeds indoors and then transplanted them. Whoops! Learning, adapting, growing (literally and figuratively) are all things I’m looking forward to now so I can become proficient in the future.

I ordered these Cherry Tomato seeds from Amazon just a few days after we put our dog to sleep. Sigh. Once I received the seeds, I realized they are “Harley” seeds. Harley was our dog’s name. We miss him dearly but he watches over the garden now.

The waiting game begins. Harvesting can happen starting around 55 days after planting. I was planning to just dote on these seedlings but my husband had other ideas.

Change of Plans

I made dinner and the recipe called for cucumber slices. He asked if the cucumber was homemade or store bought. I gave him the most puzzling look and asked “when did I plant cucumber plants?” He just shrugged his shoulders. Then he proceeds to tell me that we should grow cucumbers. Oh, and make pickles. I explain those are different varieties of my cucumber and he says to grow both. Sometimes I think he has ADHD too.

My next quest is to grow cucumbers. I am in zone 9A and according to Urban Farmer, I can plant cucumbers in August and harvest in late November. I already have something that could work as a trellis, just need the seeds!

Leonard Snart said to Barry, “There are only 4 rules you need to remember: make the plan, execute the plan, expect the plan to go off the rails, throw away the plan. Follow my lead and you’ll be fine.” For a DC Comics tv show, The Flash had some pretty decent quotes!

I made a plan. I am executing the plan. The plan isn’t quite off the rails but it is adjusting course. Throwing away the original plan for the new plan.
