There is nothing more frustrating than spending quite a bit of money in your yard on something just for it to be in bad shape a few years later!
In the summer of 2020, we had the side fences and the fencing facing the street replaced.
Time Weathers All in the Yard
Even though Mother Nature takes a toll on outdoor things, it doesn’t mean that we can’t try and make them last as long as she will let them. Fencing is one of the easiest things to destroy outside. Between the lawnmower or weed eater, dogs, weeds, dirt, etc the bottom of fences can look really ratty really fast.
In an attempt to protect our fence as much as possible, I am adding some landscaping along the fence. I do want a “natural” look so I’m not digging out the grass and leveling everything out or using an expensive boarder. I am simply cutting the grass low and piling cardboard over it. I water down the cardboard and walk all over it to remove any gap between the carboard and the dirt. Eventually the grass will die without sunlight. This way I maintain the natural slope of my yard. I had some square walking stones leftover from a previous project so I used them to create my border which also doubles as a walking trail.
Preparing the Yard for the Next Phase
For this fall season, I used an old wheelbarrow to grow my cucumbers. I moved the wheelbarrow into my newly prepped area. I am going to cover the cardboard with river rocks to make it unappealing for the dog to walk on.
Over the winter, once my cucumbers have been harvested I will prep the area for winter and that means getting rid of the wheelbarrow and putting a new raised bed in. There are a lot of ways to get to the same end result. Don’t be afraid to try something different or new.
